Impossible things before breakfast: I caught Boxcar Kitten P this morning! This guy:

He’s a twin to Kitten O, except for the amount of white on his front pawses (he has more). Something (the weather forecast with very low temps and possible flurries for tonight) possessed me to go down with a carrier and tin of food when I went to check on the food bowls this a.m. He was there, I put wet food out on the plate, and even though there was a lot of kibble from another feeder, he went for it. I had no trouble picking him up. He struggled when I put him in the carrier, but after I got him home and into my recovery space, I took him out of the carrier, put him in my lap to put Revolution on him for fleas, and within 30 seconds, he was purring.
*Then* I picked up Kittens M and O from the vet after their spay & neuter, and put them in my bathroom. I have three kittens in my apartment now, my own three cats wondering WTF, and here I am at work! I want to be home, cuddling kittens.
ohmygod. that pretty much just made my life.

There are two documentary filmmakers who are going to be miffed, because they wanted to shoot us trapping cats at the boxcars, and now we have to wait several weeks till two litters get older, but I’m in this for the cats, not the films.

Lauri C – YaY for you and the kittens!! Someone said months back, it’s like winning the Nobel Prize for Trust when you get feral kitties to purr! I’ve had a couple ferals that I socialized during my years of rescue – and the Nobel Prize for Trust is the perfect description!

Unhappy otters do exist. I witnessed an otter trying to sleep and another otter came along and tried to drag him into the water by his foot. The otter woke up very grumpy and tried to smack the second otter on the head. It was the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. But the sleepy otter looked very mad.

A friend of mine made a New Year’s Resolution last year to be more like an otter. Her reasoning was that they swim a lot, eat a lot of seafood and vegetation, and make it a priority to loll in the sunshine – all admirable activities. Otters definitely know how to have a good time!
OK I hate to say it but I think this is NOT a happy otter. I had an internship at the zoo when I was in high school and the otters HATED it when we would close them in back and clean up their display space (lots of slimey poop up front and yummy food in back but go figure).
They used to sit back there and do this hiss/screech thing at us the whole time.
One day I came back by on my lunch (because I loved the otters and didn’t think they could actually hate me) and they RECOGNIZED me and they all stood there just like this little guy is doing making that hiss/screech sound at me. All of the zoo visitors looked at me like I must have been beating the otters earlier.
Needless to say I slunk away.
He is a HAPPY otter!! That was the I am very hungry squeak.
