So that, when they went hunting in the marshes for ducks with their master, they would not harm the druck, right? (Or is it revisionist-historian grey matter?) Perhaps this Pom is one of them… ?

I think this is too darn cute. Frankly, I’m not worried about the chick at all. For one, they are pretty squishy lil dudes. For another, I seriously SERIOUSLY doubt someone would keep pictures of their pet eating another pet around for the purposes of aaaawing over them. In addition, if the chicken were in pain, I’d expect his wee wingys to be flapping and his wee beaky to be squawking, neither of which is visibile in that pic. The logical conclusion is that this is a cute, perfectly harmless pic. In fact, from the apparent calmness of the chicky, I’d not even be surprised if this had happened before.

Oh, and if the dog wanted the chickie as a munchie, I am sure s/he would have gobbled the thing up in a second. I see no harm here.

The dog isn’t biting down, it just looks that way because the chick is all fluff. Its treating the chick like a puppy.

My dog once stole a chicken while visiting a friends house, and ran all around the yard with it before they caught her. The chicken was probably a little scrambled, but it ran off without a scratch. This pic may be a chick rather than a full grown chicken, but its a very small dog being very gentle.

I own a pomeranian and he has the softest mouth of any dog I’ve ever owned. The chick is fine. If you don’t know what a soft mouth is read the Big Red series.

If there’s something wrong about these pictures, I have yet to see it. I’m not really a dog person, nor do I particularly like little dogs, but I do love Poms and have met some very decent ones. And, yes, they do have a very soft bite. Thus, I’m going to have to agree with Julia and say that the pom carrying the chick around in its mouth is probably a very common thing if there are pictures of it. I just wish whoever sent the picture would come post and reassure everyone so they’d stop freaking out x.x

All one need do is look at the physical pressure being exerted on the chick (it wasn’t that thin in the first picture, right?) to know it’s in distress. Does it need to be carrying a sign saying so in order for it to be true? If someone squeezed you to half your normal width, do you think you might be in distress?

I love the look on the dogs face. He’s all “What? What?! I’m not doing nothin’!” while holding the baby chick. I’m fairly certain of two things: 1) this has happened before because had the dog done this for the first time it wouldn’t be so clearly captured and 2) the chickie was not harmed because if it had been the person wouldn’t have sent in the photo. No one keeps a photo like that, and no one else would think it was cute. Additionally, had the pom wanted to eat the chicky the photographer wouldn’t have had time to take the shot – he/she would have gulped it whole!

So y’all just need to relax and not make me post such long things!

And if the dog DID want to eat the chicky it woulda just of bitten it, not posed cutely with the fluffy bundle in it’s mouth! Have some sense people!

I guess my feeling is that the horrors that go on LEGALLY on a regular basis in hatcheries all over the world is worth complaining about.

This just feels like an atctually innocent event by comparison. My big, scary, and blatantly aggressive black-shepard very gently collected a bunch of baby bunnies. The way he chased adults, I would have predicted a different outcome. Thankfully, our animals suprise us.

To all of you eViLdOg! people: yes, there are a few dogs out there who crunch and rend things whenever possible. Note, however, that pomeranians are a particularly calm and SHY breed; presented with a strange creature at eye level, with a sharp beak, they’d more likely run behind their owner than take a nip out of the birdie, so these two are clearly good friends or that chick wouldn’t get any where the dog’s vulnerable muzzle. And if you’ve ever had your finger nibbled on by a pom, you’d know that their teeth are tiny and not tremendously sharp and that poms barely have any jaw strength at all (you only feel a pinch if the dog is really chomping down). That pom has barely got a grip on the chickie’s fuzz.

OK…I’ve tried to get over the pic, but can’t. Please let us know that the chick is OK. Hopefully, the first pic is the “after” shot and not the “before” one.

Vampy: Absolutely correct. Why is everyone trying to determine what should and should not be cute for everyone else? If we don’t find it cute, we say so. Is it suddenly wrong to voice an opinion? Well, in America that’s true, but I mean in general. You’ve got the right idea: people can say what they will and everyone has different likes and dislikes; none of that makes anyone right or anyone wrong no matter what side of the fence you’re on.

Ultimately, the point is that most of what’s posted here is overwhelmingly cute, but this one happened to hit a grey area. For all of you harpies complaining about those who don’t think it’s cute or are voicing concerns, get over yourselves. Wield your cookie cutters elsewhere if you must. Nope, not cute. Even if the chick *wasn’t* actually harmed, the visual disturbs me.

However, even though I find this extremely not-cute, I’m not going to go off on a huge rant about “OMG how KROOL and EEVILE Cute Overload is for posting it, and I’m never coming back here again”. Most of the time, I *LIKE* CO. But everyone screws up once in a while. On to the next pic… or back to the archives of tiny bunnies and kitties and micro-froggies…

Hmm. Baby animals tend to be soft and malleable. I mean, a few weeks ago I took on a couple of feline families whose kittens were 3 weeks old. One of the mothers looked like she was eating her baby when she tried to pick it up to carry it. But they are squishy and resilient. I love how the chicky looks like a confused marshmallow.

Slightly alarming until closer inspection, where both the Pom and the chicklet are looked at the camera, all “Aren’t we anerable?! Look at us pose!” Neither seems to be in distress. ‘Tis now cute.

If a dog, even a small, cute, fluffy dog, really wanted to kill a small(er) baby chick, it would have happened fast enough that there would be no time to catch it with camera. I think it’s cute. Oh, and the soft kronche bite can be taught to any breed of dog.

Because although I found the pic upsetting at first (although on further examination, it looks like the chick is OK), I’d certainly be a lot more upset if somebody actually *killed* a cute little chicken for me… even if I didn’t get to see a picture of it happening!

Lordy… this IS a controversial one. I gasped… I laughed… and I awwwwwwwwwed. In that order. I understand the horror, but do take a closer look at the photo. Having seen naked chickies, you could tell the chick’s being held at a narrower region, with the longer teeth of the dog going AROUND, and not through. And whoever it was, earlier (can’t find it, now) is right… the chick’s mouth would be open if it was in distress. It LOOKS a little squish-ed, but relaxed. And momma Pom looks soooooo proud

Silly Pillow, I doubt if it’s chickless. It takes eggs to make a good bread puddy tasty and custardy.

I grew up with access and exposure to a lot of weird animals. Baby animals of all kinds, especially birds, but also some small mammals, are incredibly squishy and flexible. They expect to be picked up and prodded by their mothers, none of whom have opposable thumbs. It seems completely obvious to me from this pair of pictures that the dog has adopted the chick and probably carries it around like a puppy.

Also, I have occasionally tested this hypothesis by carrying kittens around in my mouth, so I totally sympathize with the Pom XD

I remember when my dog (Shep/Rottie) had kittens (well, they are adopted) she would pick them up and put them in their box, from when they were not a lot bigger than this little chickie. I never heard a single squeek and the kitties are now 5 1/2 years old, so I know no harm was ever done.

That’s so not cute. It’s like the polar opposite of cute. It’s what cute goes dressed up as for Halloween. Uncuteness.

Knock it off, people. No one cares how many screwed up things you see on a daily basis. You chose the job, so deal with it. If you think someone would post a pic of their pet killing or hurting another animal, you clearly have something screwed up in your head.

Whether or not the Pom bit down, doesn’t mean the chick wasn’t in distress. I’ve seen cats pick up mice and carry them around without hurting them too… doesn’t mean the mouse had a good time. And animal distress does not equal cute.

I hope that all of you who are raving about how cute it is, and attacking those who disagree, also defended the picture of the big dog with the baby (which granted, I have no problem with, but then again, the dog’s teeth weren’t wrapped around the kid either).

Um, I’m a vegan too, and I’m not going to freak out on the picture the way WTF did. It does make me worry a little, though.

Well put. How many of you individuals freaking out about this still eat chicken? Factory farms are horrible, horrible places and unless you buy organic meat, you are guilty of supporting animal cruelty whether you know it or not. I know that a lot of very caring people don’t realize this, which is why I’m pointing it out–and I’m also well-aware of the fact that there are many animal lovers on this site who may not be aware of where their meat comes from!

The chick-a-boo is thinking: “How can a chick find a good date these days? I mean, this one’s a real dog! And they’re all alike, one minute they’re just snuggling and the next minute their mouth is all over you! I mean, really, what’s a chick to do? Oh well, whatever…”

Bread pudding can be made (dare I say it) virgin by leaving out the booze. That’s the dull variety you get in southern restaurants, full of raisins. It’s just more fun to come home to real bread pudding and CO (or rice pudding and I have a recipe for that too). But no chicken pudding… that’s what gravy is for.

I have a friend whose cat took mice one at at time to their pool, dropped it in and calmly watched it struggle and drown. I come home to the occasional dead opossum that my dogs catch. I never manage that kind ofcoordination on my kitties’ pix.
There’s always a telephone wire or a kleenex or something off to one side, even assuming I get a picture of the thing that made me grab the camera.
Mostly I just get pictures of “a minute before this, she was ….”

I have to tell ya, the longer I look at the second picture, the funnier it gets. I have birds, and trust me, that bird is fine. If it wasn’t, that Pom would have little birdie beak slashes all over the nose.

In some ways..it’s cute. I worry less for the squishing of the chick, but more for the fact that mammals do have bacteria in their mouth that can easily kill a bird. as an earlier poster said…it’s a reason why parrot owners are very careful to not let their birds ingest any saliva. I just hope the little guy got washed off after this or something.

And chill out guys…people are just concerned about the chick’s well-being.

and as for Pomeranians never hurting anything…well I’ve still got the scars from when a pom attacked me when I was little…all I was doing was petting the other dog, which happened to be his mate.

There was a police dog shot and killed in the line of duty today here in the Tampa area. (Lakeland, FL) The suspect also killed a deputy officer, who was the K9 handler. The suspect shot the officer first, then the dog went after the suspect, and the suspect then turned and shot the dog to death. I’m not worried about the fluff ball with the fluff ball in his mouth. My heart goes out to the family of the officer and his dog.

Wise up, stop the bickering. Realize that there are other more important things to worry about or think about.

A my family’s yellow lab, Brita, used to go “fetch” our pet baby ducklings from our backyard pond and bring them to us in the house. Being a retriever, Brita never injured a duckling ever…not even once.
Oh yeah…it was redonkulously cute too when Brita would waltz up to us, cheeks puffed, with a ducky inside cheeping away. The duckys came back for more than one “ride” each too so it couldn’t have been that bad, right?

Personally I was sorta shocked by this picture. It made me stop, stare, and think, which is not something I really expect of Cute Overload. Honestly….this pom is not some big scary croc. It’s not like “mmm tasy snack *chomp*” and the person taking the photo would PROBABLY not let the dog damage the bird. Wow. Again I say, Wow. I guess there’s two things about this that make me think. Number one, that so many people care about the welfare of an animal. Number two, that we all seem to have so much time on our hands to post over 400 comments, ranging from personal attacks, to more generalized comments about the health of the chick. First of all, if the chick’s spine was broken as some posters assume, those little legs and toes would be dangling and open. They’re not. Therefore, no broken spine. Second, if the dog was actually biting down on it, it certainly wouldn’t be looking up at the camera. Having worked with and around dogs for several years, I think I can safely say that the Pom is holding the chick, not biting it. I guess I’m glad to see that so many people are concerned about the chick’s welfare, but I would have to agree with some of the other posters that I would like to see this care expanded to all areas of life; not just in response to one picture. I would love to see this controversy end, to see people get back to the business of life, and let CO get back to the buiness of posting cute pictures. If I were her I’d be freaking out! I’LL tell you what cute is. My cat runs in the house with what looks like fur or whiskers poking out of both side of her mouth. Natch, I think she has a mouse. Turns out so did she. However, when she came to rest and dropped her kill it was a mouthful of grass! HAHAHAHAH. She was all like I GOT ONE! Not!

I had a cat who *wanted* to be a hunter, but was just inept.
Fine with me.
One day he comes in all “look what I got” running around with a bird.
Sooo proud.
When I finally managed to get it away from him, I realized it was an ancient bird mummy (ick).
Current new kitty, also not a hunter, brought me a mouse-sized chip of wood that he’s been dragging about.
It doesn’t look splintery, so I’m letting him keep it.
(Bird mummy got an honorable burial.)
