  4. jaypo says:

Hahaha!! I just realized kitteh’s name is Toby. Looks like “Jody” on the tag… [looks for glasses]

  5. AuntieMame says:

Do cats even have a not-poker face?

  7. hrh.squeak says:

Dustbunny – Brilliant!! Go Jack! (Note – he *is* a marmalade kitteh, after all.)
I see Toby gloating ferociously after his Uno smackdown, don’t youall?

  8. Dustbunny says:

HRH: did you see the close up pic of Jack on Yahoo? That’s one biiig, furry cat. And no way did the bear “run away” — I bet it slunk away in shame and disgrace, hoping none of the other bears ever find out about this embarassing incident.

  9. hrh.squeak says:

Ooh, Dustbunny, link please. I am a Techno-Idiot and will never find it on my own. Must see Jack!!
My sister used to own a reaaaly mean cat. I sat on the sofa on the cushion next to its cushion and she chased me off and treed me on the bed for an hour. The cat only loved her, and only for a few minutes at a time per day. She loved that cat.

  10. Rafael says:

Stop taiking pics and start playing, mofo. I got three draw twos and a draw four with your name on them!

  11. hrh.squeak says:

    Sorry Toby. You rule.

  12. melissa says:

not so sure of toby’s cute credentials, more don’t-mess-with me look to him than snorgable. great photo though. love the way the sheets bring out the colour of his eyes!

    ah, dustbunny drew faster.

  19. alice says:

hehe she *does* have a poker face. She just knows she has a Wild Card but is saving it for last.

  20. Okay, this is only . . . uh . . . bear-ly related to this thread, but I keep seeing the mastif face on the right side bar, and now there are bears involved, and I have to tell this story.

So I was driving home from dinner yesterday, though a residential area of scenic and natural Houston, Texas (*snort*), and I saw something walking down the side walk up ahead of me that I could have SWORN was a friggin’ bear. It was about the size of a small to medium adult bear, it *lumbered* like a bear, and I knew it couldn’t be, but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out *what* it was.

Well, as I drove closer I realized it was a really HUGE and really FAT mastif walking down the sidewalk all on it’s lonesome. Long story short (too late): mastifs look like bears.

Now back to your regularly pertinant whatever it was. :-P

  21. Theo says:

Risky strategy. Bold. I like it.

  22. alice says:

Yikes, I like bears but after I watch Grizzly Man, I hope I won’t be scared of mastifs!
[lol, ElfOwl, all your degrees ;) just reminded me that I need to turn in my M.A. thesis, like right now...]

  23. E. Collison says:

    I.W.T.F.M.?

  24. AuntieMame says:

I even saw ol’ Jack on the BBC website this morning. He’s gone international!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/5067912.stm

  25. alice says:

(and I clicked on your name, and same kinda degree, too!)

  26. bob says:

    Hilarious caption, Meg.

I offer you my servitude, if you will have me.
I am clean and require little maintanance and living space. A broom closet is wonderful.

  27. Heh, well, I’m a technical writer now, so, I.W.T.F.M. is related to R.T.F.M.

R.T.F.M. is chat-speak for “Read The F-ing Manual.”

The I stands for, well, “I,” as in, “I thought it was funny.” :-P

  28. Alice – Woohoo! You go, thesis girl! Congrats! I cheated. They didn’t make me write one. ;-)

I love how many English majors I’ve met on this site! :-P

  29. E. Collison says:

ElfOwl, I had a feeling that IWTFM meant what you said just above … ;)

  30. E. Collison says:

And…. Toby reminds me of actor James Coburn, for some reason.

  31. alice says:

LOL at IWTFM! Yay I just posted my thesis! but officially won’t get to do my M.A. Yay dance until August :D

  32. Tiberia says:

Beautiful cat…..but I think if I saw him staring at me like that I’d run!

  33. Sarah-Jean says:

    LOL omg that’s soooo cute!!

  34. Aly says:

    Haha, Jack and Toby pwn!

  35. Michele says:

omg he has a very good Uno Face lol

  36. Aly says:

Hey, me and Meg BOTH said “pwn”! *starstruck*

  37. Dalida says:

    Meg is a geek :(

+ Dopey is a cute name!

  38. jaypo says:

    Mighty Jack–awesome cat!

    Mighty Alice–congrats on that!

  39. TwoShedsJackson says:

The Brain might have tried to take over the world repeatedly but I reckon Toby could manage it first try with no bother – and without the aid of Pinky.

  40. Rafael says:

“My name is Bond, Toby Bond.”

  41. Teddy says:

Someone needs to tell Toby that the real money is in Poker

    Teddy

  42. gryt says:

The catprint pillow in the background is a nice detail.

  43. I wonder if he won?

  44. Liana says:

    “go fish”

  45. Netherland Dwarf rabbit, owner!!♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ says:

I’m impressed that the cat allowed for owner to pose him like that AND then also stayed like that long enough for the photo to be taken!

    Great pic!

  46. Theo says:

    Ha, Liana!

And Dalida — Meg is a para-geek. Teh 213374U crew tends to hang out here http://slashdot.org/ …although there’s definitely some overlap.
    ;)

  47. A thinker says:

    PPF: Perfect Poker Face.

  48. Theo says:

ElfOwl — might IWTFM be related to MIT’s IHTFP?

  49. lainey says:

The act of holding the cards is cute, but the cat itself is most definitely NOT.

  50. A thinker says:

oh no. cat is cute. mos’ def cute.

  51. A thinker says:

…I wish to *KISS* his nose.

  52. Heh, nope, Theo, no relation to the MIT acronym.

  53. lauowolf says:

The cat itself is cute, but the act of holding card in itself is not.

  54. A thinker says:

    umm…hokay.

  55. lauowolf says:

Not that the cat, holding cards, isn’t cute too.

Just the act of holding cards, all by itself, isn’t.

    Oh never mind.
    I need some tea.

  56. Theo says:
  57. EricaE says:

The Uno cat is pretty but Jack is undoubtedly my new hero! What a plucky little fuzzball.

Thanks for sharing that story. :D

  58. i love this pic. today my cat was laying on a stack of phase 10 cards, i think she’s too dumb to play.

    http://www.channelremote.com

  59. alice says:

My roommate’s cat loves to lie on a stack of my papers or a book, and it really looks like she’s reading – totally cute. I should set out a stack of Uno cards sometime and see what she does with them…

  60. alice says:

lauowolf (and lainey), about the cat and the holding of cards – the cat does seem to have a very firm grip there. I would be scared to cross her.

  61. KiMbObImBo says:

You can tell Toby is totally the Uno master.

  62. fate says:

that cat has an evi; look in his eye. i can see it

  63. English Chick says:

I would NOT like to play him in a game of poker. because then i would be broke.

  64. kelly says:

one person’s cute is another person’s not cute. I’m a sucker for full grown domestic shorthairs like this guy. I just want to pick him up and kiss his face, yes I dooo…

  65. Thalia says:

Someone should tell Stephen Colbert about Jack the Cat. I’m sure he’d laud Jack as a hero fighting the Good Fight vs. the evil bear scourge.

  66. Michelle says:

Alice, your roommate’s cat *is* reading the paper.

  67. Laurie C says:

Thalia, I’m sure he has his crack staff scouring the news sites constantly for bear items. Maybe Jack will even get a “Tip of the Hat”.

Coincidentally, this post has the same name as one of his recurring segments “Formidable Opponent”. I wonder if Meg did that on purpose? (Of course, to match the Colbert model, Toby would have to be playing Uno against himself.

  68. Dustbunny says:

I’d like to eavesdrop on the conversation at that bear’s den after he returns home after being chased by Jack…”Dude, tell us about how a ferocious snarling tiger chased you up a tree!…except, wait a sec — it wasn’t a tiger was it? It was a little pussycat!! BwaaHaaHaa (or whatever sound a bear makes when laughing)

  69. Beth says:

Aw, that’s so great! I should teach my cat to play Uno. Maybe then…maybe then I wouldn’t be so lonesome…

  70. Someone says:

He’s holding the cards the wrong way!! Cute! =D

  71. tiddlypomofwinniethepooh says:

Look at him trying to confuse you with his cold eyes. He shall hypnotize you and make YOU say puurrr and thuse the cats shall take over the world and truly clarify that cats are the masters of all!

  72. Rafael says:

    Someone:

Not really, Uno cards can b read up or down, the have lettering on the top and bottom. That’s Toby’s way of throwing you off. First the cards and then the deadpan stare.

    Toby:”Draw Four, Pilgrim!”

  73. Laurie C says:

    I hear you, Beth.

  74. TPK says:

There is no other word but brilliant. Brilliant.

  75. E. Collison says:

You know who would be a *really* tough oppoenent?

    Madeleine:

  76. Laurie C says:

Oh, la la! She could totally distract Toby with her feminine wiles.

  77. Isaiah Schneeweis-LaRene says:

  81. Siaarn says:

No update today? :< Anyways, I wonder how they got the cards to stay up..

  82. Aubrey says:

“I’ve got shares in South African diamonds, Argentinian silver and Meox Mix from the good ole U.S. of A. I got four hot cards in my paw, and punk, I FEEL LUCKY. The Cat-osphere’s High Roller Club is open all night, Vegas never sleeps – I am ready to play!”

  83. EverBear says:

If you like that cat pics like this… you’re gonna love http://www.stuffonmycat.com. It’s FABULOUS!

  84. ShelleyTambo says:

It’s taken me two days to figure out what struck me as off in this pic–aren’t Siamese eyes blue? Is Toby a mix? Or is this just an effect of the photo?

  85. Theo says:

ShellyT — there might be some red-eye correction happening here. Reflective kitty retinas + xenon camera flash = FEEEEAR.

  86. alice says:

    E.C. – I just overheard this conversation:

Madeleine: I shall charrrm you with my wiiily wayz.
    Toby [scowl]
Madeleine: Tell me, my darrrlink, do you haave a Wild card?
    Toby: None of your beeswax.
Madeleine: Do not rezzist. Madeleine can reeead yourz mind. I wiill have your rrrred two.
    Toby [twitch twitch]

  87. alice says:

That is – Toby junior ownee, of course ;)

  88. ShelleyTambo says:

Theo–If that’s the case, I need to figure out how to use the red eye reduction on my camera. I took some pics of three flame points at my shelter this weekend, and they’ve all got major red eye beams–surrounded by a barely discernible rim of blue.

  89. Theo says:

Shelly — if I’m right, probably it was done after the fact. Like… y’know… with [ahem] software. I’ve never had much success with the “redeye reduction” feature on a camera.

  90. ShelleyTambo says:

Theo, might you be referring to [whispers] Photoshop? (I haven’t figured out the red eye reduction on my camera’s image editing software, either.)

  91. chacha says:

Toby is a beauty. Those eyes! Maybe there is some Korat in the ancestry. My cats show no interest in cards, I’m trying dice next.

  92. Laurie C says:

Oh, yes, dice. Not only do they rhyme with “mice”, but they bounce around when you roll them, and can be batted under the couch with a paw. Your cats will like them very much. And you will kick yourself the next time you play Yahtzee and they join in.

  93. Holly says:

Looks like Toby is ready to go all in, poker style. He’s a beauty! Reminds me of my mother’s Tonkinese named Simon.

  94. Aubrey says:

    LC:
Yes, I can imagine a group of cats joining in for a rousing game of Paw-tzee.

  95. LawyerofLeisure says:

Looks like Toby is the boss in this house, and not just ‘cuz of his “I rule” glare— didja check out the pillowcase? Cats!!!

  96. ebee says:

Ok everyone, please expand my vocab and tell me what PWNS is?

  97. kelly says:

It’s a gaming term, meaning “owns” as in “I own you”, but when typing quickly, that sometimes becomes “pwn”.

So where DID Toby get that swank tag? I simply HAVE to know!

  98. Theo says:
  99. o says:

    Hm

My grandparents had a siamese (a beatiful, slightly crazy bluepoint) named Toby from the mid 70′s to the early 90′s.

She’s dead. My grandparents are fine.

    Go, toby, you crrrrazy mofo!

  100. E. Collison says:

    “E.C. – I just overheard this conversation:…”

Alice, my thought is that he let her win from the get-go. ‘Cause you don’t meet one of the Gabor sisters every day.

  101. Kat says:

Omg, that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. He even has the poker face.

  102. Gabby's Daddy says:

Everybody knows that Toby’s like: “I can’t believe you’re making me do this” and “I’ll get you for this”.

  103. Laurie C says:

Jack, the bear treeing cat *did* get recognized on Colbert last night. The Brass Bells of Feline Bravery, no less.

  104. clifford says:

Thank you for stopping by my site
