Stayin’ Afloat

by Meg on May 9, 2006

Give it up—there are certain people—you know who you are—that help to keep us upright. Just like the lil’ fins of this Baby Boxfish. [Flutter! Flutter!] That’s right People, GIVE IT UP for those people who, on a daily basis, prop ya up and keep things going.

That means you, Natalie! (my fabulous co-worker who is *always* there…) Thank you.

Babyboxfish

Baby Boxfeeshe Bloooop! Thanks, PBase.com

20 Displayname 05.09.06 at 12:29 pm

Yes, Elanor. It’s a new hybrid lemon. For our convenience, it has been bred with genes from strawberries so that the seeds form on the outside. Just a gentle squeeze and…

21 A thinker 05.09.06 at 12:34 pm

Wee tiny round fishie. I imagine him buzzing gently as he flutters by…

AND, speaking of support–gotta hand it to Meg who provides us all with cuteness and genius commentary to get us through the day. YAY MEG!!!

22 A thinker 05.09.06 at 12:35 pm

…and, just on second thought, the fishie looks rather like a yellow, spotted piggy bank. Tiny piggy snout, anyone?!

23 jaypo 05.09.06 at 12:46 pm

Tiny piggy snout, yes! What a fancy, prosh little guy…I can testify to the anerable *cuteness* of fish, as an avid observer of my betta. Personality plus! Fish are awesome, not cuddly but awesome.

And of course to Meg and CO, multiple props…Thanks a mill!

Yes, the sealemon’s peculiar markings give it distinct advantage for survival.
When sensing danger, it quickly hides beneath the tail of the female seagiraffe.
There is symbiotic beauty in this refuge: the sea lemon is perfectly camouflaged, and female seagiraffe appears to be the ferocious male of the species, whom knows no predators.
In rare instances, however, if the threat of danger persists unduly, the seagiraffe may become emotionally attached to her sealemon. Upon it’s inevitable departure the seagiraffe, for a time, may exhibit a behavior scientists now refer to as sealemon envy.

31 M- 05.09.06 at 3:01 pm

Wait, I thought the platypus was evidence of God’s sense of humor… or was it evidence that God was getting stoned… I can never get that straight… either way the platypus is evidence of something …. and this guy is evidently cute!

37 Aubrey 05.09.06 at 4:38 pm

Can’t beat those tropical fishies for color and pattern. I’m also liking the teeny mouth used for chowing down on the coral, and that mantilla shaped (or maybe I’ve just had too many cough drops) fishie-tail.

38 E. Collison 05.09.06 at 4:44 pm

I think it’s your cough meds, Aubrey. [giggles]

They should have another Latin name for the babies, as ” Ostracion cubicus” certainly is a good description of the adults. (I love the “cubicus” part.)

39 The Guy Over There 05.09.06 at 4:47 pm

Oh my god, I wonder how it would handle in my tank. :O

40 E. Collison 05.09.06 at 4:47 pm
41 A thinker 05.09.06 at 4:50 pm

“Ostracion cubicus”!!!

LOL! That just made my day. Who knew what power a Latin species name could have…

42 DLT 05.09.06 at 5:40 pm

in my world, props go to zoe (pug X fox terrier, 11), ella (beagle X pointer, 9), duck (DSH calico, 15), squash (DSH gray tabby, 14) and leon (DSH orange tabby, 13)…my houseful of geriatric babies!!!

they remind me why it is good to be alive.

43 Aubrey 05.09.06 at 6:23 pm

There once was a fishie named Bloop
Who lifed in the saltwater soup
With fins and tail that were equally prosh
He would never be found
In lion congas
‘Neath a car
Or in a kitty-cat mosh
Though seas may change
And tides wax and wane
Adoration and fame
Will never diminish
For this
Wee
Tiny
Yellow
And black-spotted box fish

44 HaileySqueek 05.09.06 at 6:46 pm

I had no idea that a baby fishy could be so cute!

45 Denita TwoDragons 05.09.06 at 7:05 pm

Shout-outs today> Okeydoke–I wanna give a HUGE, TEXAS-SIZED shout-out to my loving husband of 10 years, Eric, my crazy 3 1/2-year-old son Zane, my kitties Underfoot and Jadis, all my close friends both ON and OFF the ‘Net–AND all things CuteOverload, of course! *grin*

As for the fishie, I thought it looked more like a painted golf ball. But now that you mention it, it looks more like a spotted lemon instead. Can I have one with my iced tea?? ^__^

–TwoDragons

46 Denita TwoDragons 05.09.06 at 7:09 pm

YIPES!! I just did some research on boxfishes. They can release a powerful toxin that’s deadly to other fishes on contact!

Don’t wanna tick little Junior off, there! @.@

47 M- 05.09.06 at 8:00 pm

He sooo over ate! (Or he was born like that, your call)Besides i think he over ate. Ihad a fish and when he got that big he exploded:( cry

61 Mr. Dude 08.26.06 at 5:59 pm

Despite its odd shape, the boxfish is actually quite aerodynamic. However, it doesn’t have enough under the hood to take advantage of its unique shape. However, the Mercedes-Benz “Bionic” concept vehicle has the same basic shape as the boxfish, allowing for a more aerodynamic vehicle, Pretty sweet, eh? Also, about our little fishy: He is very, very, very cute. Seriously. My head nearly exploded. Wow.

62 swanny 02.23.07 at 2:13 pm

*lol* I’ve never thought that fishs could be so sweet and cute!!!!!

63 justine 07.05.07 at 5:44 am

One of the cutest animals at the aquarium I worked at! You forgot to mention though that it’s toxic enough to kill all fish in the tank with it (including itself) when it gets agitated. Believe me I was working there when it happened.

For me that just adds to the cuteness =D
