The definition of “Ehn”!

by Meg on April 7, 2006

What does "Ehn!" mean? Let’s let Pierre the Parrotlet demonstrate:

Pierre: [stepping up, begrudgingly] "Ehn!"

Ehn

Also doing his best definition of "Ehn!" is Snalio Iglesias….
Thanks for sending in, Susan S.!

2 Karl 04.07.06 at 10:01 am

Is it “Ehn!”, or is it “Move your &*^%ing finger a little closer, you sadistic bastard!”?

3 Subhangi 04.07.06 at 10:33 am

Pretty blue parrot!!! SQUAWK.

4 StormCat 04.07.06 at 11:09 am

Karl: It’s too early, but you made me laugh out loud at my desk…Good thing no one is here yet…

5 A thinker 04.07.06 at 11:18 am

Is he stepping *up* or stepping *off*? There’s one to debate for a while.

6 Brittanie 04.07.06 at 11:34 am

Nice man-icure!

7 Torie 04.07.06 at 12:31 pm

Awww…now I miss my birdie! That is so cute! Perfect!

8 Jan Spencer 04.07.06 at 12:44 pm

Stepping up or stepping off…hmmm, what came first, the chicken or the egg? See, easily debatable.

:)

He’s all, “OMG! MEG. Stop asking for fekking demonstra-SHONS, oh-kay?!”

And we say, no. Pierre. Don’t stop.

:O

IT’S THE NORWEGIAN BLUE PARROT FROM MONTY PYTHON!!!

He was right, this parrot wouldn’t “voom” if you put 20,000 volts into it!

12 Courtney 04.07.06 at 2:07 pm

Hee hee!

‘Ehn’ is my favorite word. I saw it sometimes in the morning when I am running late.

13 jaypo 04.07.06 at 2:42 pm

Sweet li’l fellar!! I’ve had several birds (sometimes all at once) and they’re SOOO full of personality! What a sparkly charmer….sighhhh

14 kat 04.07.06 at 2:57 pm

Haha. Oh, how I wish he were a Parakeet, not a Parrotlet, because then I could make a “begrudging Budige” joke.

15 juliette 04.07.06 at 3:07 pm

“…Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there.”

16 Michele 04.07.06 at 3:21 pm

awwww hes just practicing his gymnastics!

17 Theo 04.07.06 at 3:21 pm

“Blue canary in the outlet by the lightswitch
“Who watches over you…
“Make a little birdhouse in your soul”

18 M- 04.07.06 at 3:24 pm

Okay… another moment of ignorance… what is the difference between a Parakeet and a Parrotlet? Either way this guy is the most facinating shade of aqua I have ever seen… pretty baby!

19 finn 04.07.06 at 3:32 pm

earworm’s back. thx, theo.

jaypo, did u get my email?

20 jaypo 04.07.06 at 3:47 pm

M- The Parakeets are the common little guys you see in pet stores. Pierre is a Parrotlet. More like a petit parrot variety. Two different species.

finn, I lowered my spam filter and it came through. will respond soon!

Yay Theo! You would know They Might Be Giants, don’t know why I’m surprised.

23 Theo 04.07.06 at 4:50 pm

Oh I have a WEALTH of dorky TMBG quotes at my disposal. You’ve been warned.

24 Diane 04.07.06 at 5:22 pm

Whoa, this guy even has blue feet and bill. Is that normal, or did he just bathe in some really funky blue stuff?

25 Laura 04.07.06 at 5:30 pm

We really should start a CO terminology page… with ehn, snorgle and terms of the like :)

26 faye 04.07.06 at 6:03 pm

ahh!!im gnna fall!!!

27 Regina 04.07.06 at 6:16 pm

If anyone is still unsure of what “ehn” sounds like, go see Ice Age 2. Scrat makes very classic ehn sounds while trying to rescue his acorn :)

When we got him, we thought the little blue feet were a mite odd, but the vet confirmed that they, like his beak, are pigmented. He’s not a fan of the step-up, which is the most important command for any bird to master as it can save them from a sticky situation.

29 jaypo 04.07.06 at 7:35 pm

snusnu, is he a kind of budgie or like a small lovebird?

30 belle 04.07.06 at 7:51 pm

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Theo, I was thinking the same thang…

31 snusnu 04.07.06 at 8:19 pm

Nope, Jaypo, a Pacific Parrotlet (or Celestial Parrotlet) is a separate species called Forpus in the Psittacidae family. Parakeets and lovebirds are in the same family but different genuses. Parrotlets are the smallest true parrot, and are closely related to Amazons. They come from a similar region.

Oh, Pierre’s just doin’ a lil’ soft shoe routine… [Hee.]

36 Oedipa 04.09.06 at 9:21 am

Cool ass bird. I hope he/she gets to fly around every day, etc. Reminds me of my bird. Named Skybird. He had 157 phrases memorized and repeated them for years until he dies of old age (after 12 years or something like that).

37 Jackie 04.10.06 at 7:28 pm

Hmmm…I didn’t know birds came in that iridescent blue color…

38 luch 04.28.06 at 4:35 pm

i still dont understand why ‘ehn’? this site is so random. a parrot was on our school roof yesterday. it was interesting but it gave me the evils.
