Actually I found a very effective and humane way to deal with this (don’t believe in declawing)… I found a wonderful product that caps my cats claws called Soft Claws. You just clip the tips and glue them on go, they even come in colors (very prosh). Neither one of my girls mind or seem to notice them and my furniture, clothes and skin are much happier for it (both girls are serious kneeders). The only thing you have to watch for is when they shed from wear. Overall my husband and I LOVE them and they are a humane way for us (cats, furniture & humans) to live happily together. My husband giggles and calls them kitty press ons…

I know dog nails need to be exposed so they can be ‘filed’ on a daily basis by gravel, concrete etc. Do kitty ‘needles’ not need the filin’? or do they not grow beyond a certain length?
My kitty’s permanently filed so I had never gotten to know…
It is quite sad but she makes up for the lack of needley defenses by 1) stealing the yorkie’s food and becomes Monsta’ size Kitty and 2) acting purtty high and up there as some ole queen so no other kitties would ever dare oppose her..

I thought my ole yorkie would love ticklin’ as much as we do, but whenever I get close to her cute paddy paws she gets upset and snargles at me (ever so gently tho); she prefers the ticklin’ over/under her ears, by her neck… hehe

Unlike dogs whose nails will keep growing until they curl into the pad, cats claws reach a maximum (and very sharp length) and then shed naturally. Periodically I find claw slivers around my house, it doesn’t seem to bother the cats, their claws are sort of layered and designed to stop growing at a certain length. I get the feeling the anatomy goes along with the purpose of the claws, they are much finer and more razor-like than the nails of a dog. Personally I use clippers not for length but for damage contol, primarily to me, and then recap them. My mom’s dog however has been clipped by me once and I think I was more traumatized than he was, they are a whole different texture and MUCH more difficult than a cat. Cat’s really have a true claw for hunting and capturing, its their primary wepon/grip. Dogs, not so much, their weapon of choice would be teeth.

Yes I was equally traumatized when I too first clipped Ms. yorkie’s nails. (Took me a couple of years to get over with it; it was to the groomers every so often since that awful day ;9)
Claws are important to cats, for one thing its their primary climbing tool and also away to explore their world around them (literally the scratch and sniff everything). Most cats I know rarely use their claws prefering either to avoid people until they are good and ready or simply snorgling and been content.
Can I be the first person to post a “honk-SHUUUUUUUUUUUUUU” comment here?
