Bonsai Hamster

by Meg on March 23, 2006

Please forgive moi, but I cannot find the sender of this delightful photo. The only thing I have left is the title; "Bonsai Hamster"—which is just too damn funny. Check out his leetle tail in his Habitrail cup. Way too much proshness.

3 MH 03.23.06 at 8:05 am

Tiny hammie paws! Tiny hammie tail! aaaaawwwwwwww :) )

4 Yushi 03.23.06 at 8:10 am

hahaha XD yeah, hamsters LOVE sleeping in cramped spaces, i guess it makes them feel safe. That’s why they can be as goofy as they can be ^_^

5 Ashley 03.23.06 at 8:17 am

His little squinty sleepy eyes are sooooo adorable in the close-up!

6 Sarah 03.23.06 at 8:28 am

Eeek! All this does it remind me of the awful Bonsai Kitten prank!

But the hammie feet at rather cute.

7 KC 03.23.06 at 9:02 am

That is just too cute! Makes me want another hamster. =)

8 Lee 03.23.06 at 9:41 am

Having never had a close relationship with a hamster, I’m astounded at his little feetsies. Are those normal for hamsters to have pads that look like stalagmites?

They’re very cute.

9 darliza 03.23.06 at 10:38 am

bonsai hamster? is this like the same concept as the bonsai kitten? then it wouldn’t be cute at all… >_<

a link of the article is here… http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/pranks/bonsai.html

11 Wendy 03.23.06 at 11:27 am

Aaaaaaaaaawwwwwww. Wook at his cutie wittle pink feetsies!

12 Carlisa 03.23.06 at 11:54 am

Subhangi– I think that’s the funniest part, too! I love the little cauliflower feets but their tails are even more unusual. Been a long time since I owned one but I still wonder how in the world they can sit with such a stiff tail.

13 Carlisa 03.23.06 at 12:29 pm

Lee—- Everyone needs to own a hamster at some point in their lives! :o )
They have velvet soft feet and are actually quite “cud-jee” :o )

Also, that hammieku is AWESOME.

24 Laura 03.23.06 at 2:18 pm

I must admit, because of this site I got it into my head to adopt some hammies. Through Petfinder.com, I found 3 brothers and 3 sisters who needed a loving home (I keep them in separate cages by gender, of course). Their names? Girls: Poppy, Pansy, and Peony. Boys: Brownie, Mr. Nippers, and the Other One (my hubby was in charge of naming the boys).

35 Laura 03.23.06 at 3:02 pm

Hi jaypo,

I actually adopted my hamsters (for free) from a local Petco store near me. They offer animals for sale, of course, but they also have an area for fostered/stray animals looking for homes. I’m against pet stores myself, but Petfinder directed me to this place. (The Petco staff member said a person dropped them off because their hamsters mated and they didn’t want the babies.)

36 you guys r silly 03.23.06 at 3:04 pm

crunchy seeds, ripe fruit,
fresh cedar chips to dig in,
*sweet dreams* tiny friend.

37 jaypo 03.23.06 at 3:11 pm

Thanks, Laura! There is a Petco store in my area. I’ll give them a call to see if they have any little munchkins needing a home. Keeping my fingers crossed!

i love it

40 Becci 03.23.06 at 3:59 pm

Laura–I think it’s great that you adopted your hamsters! And six?! Wow!!! What in the world will you do when they get old enough to fight with each other?

To everyone else: Petco is notorious for being neglectful and cruel to small animals, so you’ll want to avoid them. I had no idea that they offered surplus hamsters up occasionally, though, so that’s obviously a different situation!

41 Kell 03.23.06 at 4:05 pm

This little piggy went to market
This little piggy stayed home
This little piggy ate roast beef
This little piggy had none
This little piggy laid parquette
This little piggy polished chrome
This little piggy swam though coral reef
This little piggy bought a phone

(after 73 more toes…)

And *this* little piggy went wee wee wee all the way home!

42 Javi Lavandeira 03.23.06 at 5:06 pm

51 mariser 03.23.06 at 8:37 pm

Javi,

I don’t think I had seen pictures of Coco in “Baruchito’s Homecage” before. he is quite charming, just like his old man.
Coco lives with Flan, Nana, “Mama” and yourself, no?
please post more pics, but post them in “Baruchito’s Homecage”, please.

cheers, if I still miss Baru, I can’t imagine how much you must miss him…

52 cutefan 03.23.06 at 9:49 pm

57 Monica 03.24.06 at 3:10 am

To jaypo:

If you’re adopting hamsters, be sure to get the right bedding! Alot of people don’t know this but pine and cedar wood chips are dangerous and can cause respiratory infections from the oils they release as well as the dust. And don’t ever use cotton, even the cotton hammie “bedding” they sell in stores. Hammies can get those stuck in their cheeks, ingest them and clog their tummies, or have the fibers wrap around and cut off circulation on their little limbs, which can actually amputate them. The best bedding is Aspen wood chips (no bad chemicals and little dust, also super soft) or Carefresh paper bedding. I recommend aspen because it hides odor better.

58 - 03.24.06 at 2:37 pm

Bonsai? That’s a really harsh way of treating animals. It’s not very cute honestly.

59 ........ 03.24.06 at 11:47 pm

yes, i agree. >_< having bonsai animals should be banned.

60 AuntieMame 03.25.06 at 12:06 am

“Bonsai” animals is a hoax. Don’t get yourself worked up over it.

61 adrianna 03.25.06 at 9:30 am

that hammie looks very content in that position.

62 Denita TwoDragons 03.25.06 at 6:01 pm

Monica–I’ve seen corncob bedding sold before as well, and I highly recommend it. It’s the cobs that are left after the corn is stripped off, ground down into a rough litter. I’ve seen it sold as an alternative to litterbox clay for cats, plus it’s biodegradable and very gentle on a rodent’s respiratory system. I used it for the rats I used to have and it worked incredibly well!

(As an aside, it’s also great in the garden! *grin!*)

Hammie’s little popcorn-feet are the cah-yootest!
