This just in: Shelley’s Sugargliders

by Meg on December 12, 2005

Alert reader Shelley sends the following delectable photo of her former roommate’s sugargliders to CuteOverload.com. We greatly appreciate such a fine submission! Their names are "Kai" (boy) and "Rin" (girl) (natch) and are absolutely prosh.

What do Sugargliders look like mid-glide in your living room, when you least expect it just as you place your Thanksgiving Turkey on the table? Why this, of course! Perfectly caught mid-flight by the apt-named Squirrels R Forever.com

Sugar gliders are adorable, but they’re not, ah, toilet trainable. think “bird”…

They look like super skinny squirrels!

Amazing indoor action!

Actually, gliders are toilet trainable…they can be taught to return to their cage for doing business. They’re very smart. That said, they are also very MESSY eaters and their pee smells like ammonia, so you have to be super good about cleaning their space.

Cute cute cute.

But it looks photoshopped to me–check that other items apart from the glider do not seem to cast shadows,

Aren’t sugargliders endangered and, thus, not legal to own as pets in most countries?

This is a cute kind of animal and I like it a lot. My friend hates them but I love it.

I can’t believe people would keep these in a house… they’re not pets!! dimwits.

Not necessarily. It looks like typical on-camera flash to me, concentrated on the focal point and dopping off quickly towards the back – and there’s nothing between the wee beastie and the wall to cast any more shadows.

Sorry, but the sugarglider would have to go! I am not a fan of rodents.

What a kamikaze-pilot! And is that a horrible Bob Ross in the background?

Actually, sugargliders are marsupials. They love to sleep in pouches (hats hanging on walls, soft-sided briefcases, pockets on clothing, etc.). When you get a young sugarglider, you can keep them in a pouch that you carry around, and they will bond with you. The sugargliders I have met were always quite fond of their owners. They warm up to new people, but it takes some time. I think they make fantastic pets. They yell at your enemies and leap onto your shoulder when you’re said. Plus, they’re wicked easy to juggle. Those furry little bastards rock my world.

Yes flying squirels and sugargliders are not the same thing. Sugargliders are native to Australia and are marsupials, flying squirels can be found on most other continents and are not marsupials, though they do have a lot of similarity in apperance.
